A Glimpse into Portland's Rich History
Portland, affectionately known as the "City of Roses," has a storied history marked by exploration, industry, and cultural growth. Founded in the mid-19th century, the city quickly became a hub for timber and trade, attracting pioneers and entrepreneurs eager to capitalize on its abundant natural resources. Over time, Portland blossomed into a vibrant urban center, celebrated for its commitment to sustainability, arts, and community.
The Legacy of Pittock Mansion
Constructed between 1909 and 1914, Pittock Mansion was the residence of Henry and Georgiana Pittock, influential figures in Portland's development. Henry Pittock, originally from England, journeyed to Oregon via wagon train and eventually became the owner of The Oregonian newspaper, transforming it into a leading daily publication. Georgiana, an avid gardener, played a pivotal role in establishing Portland's reputation as the "City of Roses" by founding the Portland Rose Society and initiating the city's first rose show in 1889.
The mansion itself is a 16,000-square-foot French Renaissance-style home, designed by architect Edward T. Foulkes. Innovative for its time, the mansion featured modern amenities such as a central vacuum system, intercoms, indirect lighting, an elevator, and a walk-in refrigerator.
After the Pittock family vacated the residence in 1958, the mansion faced potential demolition following significant damage from the Columbus Day Storm in 1962. However, the local community rallied to preserve this historic landmark. The City of Portland purchased the property in 1964, and after extensive restoration, Pittock Mansion opened to the public as a museum in 1965.
